Our third quarter partner for 2018 is the Friends of the Virginia Beach Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court.
The mission of Friends is to make a difference in the lives of children and their families by providing the resources and programs that will enable them to lead healthy and productive lives. They fill the gap left by state and local governments by providing basic living essentials: clothing, beds, furniture, food, personal hygiene items, school supplies and the costs of transportation. In addition, Friends pays registration fees for afterschool activities, summer camps and youth league sports. In the last fiscal year, Friends helped over 500 children and their families; 138 children received Christmas presents, and 44 memberships to local recreation centers were purchased. Over 100 families visited their clothes closet, located in the court building, where gently-used adult and children's clothing are given away at no charge.
Any child connected to the Court, whether through a criminal act, a custody hearing, a domestic violence or protective service complaint, is eligible for their help. They accept referrals from social workers, probation officers, schools, attorneys and judges. By helping these children, we hope to empower them to be successful. It is hard for children to do well when their basic needs are not being met.
Friends is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and all donations are tax deductible. Their Board of Directors is comprised of community partners.
Our coin machines are located at both our Thalia and Princess Anne branches. The machines count coins which you can deposit into your account or get cash back. Best of all, the coin machines take loose change, meaning you’ll never have to roll coin again!
There is a nominal fee for using the coin machines. Members are charged 2% of coin deposit, and guest members pay 4% of coin deposit. Rather than keeping the fee income, though, we are matching and donating all collected fees to our Coins for Community partner.
