Shred Events And Operation Backpack

Each spring, we host a free shred event for our members and city employees. The event is free, however we do accept donations of backpacks and school supplies to help raise awareness for Operation Backpack. The Operation Backpack awareness and donation drive collects donations from April - July of each year in both Beach Municipal FCU branch locations.

Our last Shred Event was held Saturday, April 27 from 10am to 1pm at the Thalia branch.  Thank you to all who attended! Our next shred event date will be posted in January 2025. 

All donations are given to the Virginia Beach City Public Schools for students in need for the upcoming school year. 

How can I make a donation?

Both branches collect donations all summer long. Please contact the marketing department with any questions.

What kind of donations do you accept?

During the events, donations of new backpacks or cash donations are accepted, but not required.

Who receives the donations?

All donations are passed directly to the VBCPS Family & Community Engagement department and given to students during the Virginia Beach City Public School's Back-To-School Care Fair and the Restock-N-Roll events. 

In 2023, over 3,500 backpacks were distributed between both events.

Shred Dates & Times

2024: April 27 

Location: Beach Municipal FCU Thalia Branch

Time: 10am –1pm. Please do not come early, there will not be parking available. Enter only via the Thalia Branch main entrance.

What to expect: At 10:00 am the Thalia Branch parking lot area will be opened. Beach Municipal FCU employees will direct you to follow the orange cones up to the shred truck. When you reach the truck, please put your vehicle in park. Beach Municipal FCU employees will approach your vehicle to assist you with carrying your boxes to the shred machine. A donation will be accepted at that time. All vehicles will exit onto the side road of the branch.

Limit 4 boxes per vehicle.
